Inscribed: "O! if you knew how much I sigh to see you" - Marquis de La Fayette renounced his title in 1790, traveled to the U.S. and enlisted to aid the struggling colonies.This romantic inscription is from a July 23, 1777 letter to his wife now in the collection of the NY Historical Society. The complete sentence reads: "O! if you knew how much I sigh to see you, how much I suffer at being separated from you, and all that my heart has been called on to endure, you would think me somewhat worthy of your love!"
